Robert Finegan - Confined in One's Skin
Confined in One's Skin is a personal visual journey that documents my experience living with eczema.
The project explores the physical and emotional impact of a chronic skin condition through a sequence of scrapbook-style compositions. Each spread represents a different stage in my life, beginning with calm, layered visuals that reflect more normality before gradually shifting toward more minimal and uncomfortable imagery. It mirrors my growing awareness of the condition and the effects it has on body image, confidence and daily life. I have combined photography, texture and handwritten elements to create an intimate and honest representation of living in a body that, to me, feels not right and restricted. The project highlights the contrast between how things appear externally and how they feel internally, using visual storytelling to communicate a deeply personal experience. This contrast is explored through a progression of visuals that move from calm and structured compositions into more minimal and uncomfortable arrangements that reflect the growing impact of the condition over time.
About Robert
Robert Finegan is a 2026 Creative Digital Media graduate of TU Dublin with a strong focus on graphic design, photography, and visual storytelling. Over the course of his studies, he has developed an approach that combines design principles with expressive and experimental techniques. His work is mostly driven by personal experience, using visual elements to communicate thoughts and emotions that are otherwise difficult to express. He hopes to begin his career in graphic design or communications, where he can apply his skills in visual storytelling, content creation and layout design. He is motivated to continue to learn and develop his skills within the creative industry to contribute to meaningful projects and work to create a strong professional practice. He is interested in opportunities that allow him to explore a range of creative media, like photography and visual design, to continue to build his experience within a professional environment. He is looking forward to developing his creative practice further and gaining experience to work in the industry.
