Christelle Da Gama - "In My Own Words"
“In My Own Words" is a visual and audio-based project that explores Black identity through personal stories and self-expression.
Based on real-life interviews, it gives Black women the space to define themselves in their own words rather than being shaped by stereotypes, assumptions, or outside narratives. The project blends interview footage with minimal, poetic visuals to create an intimate and reflective experience. Through honest conversations, it highlights how identity is not only complex and personal but also constantly evolving. Instead of focusing on politics or statistics, the project centres on voice, emotion, and lived experience. It explores themes of self-definition, growth, perception, and empowerment, allowing each story to stand on its own. Ultimately, "In My Own Words" celebrates the beauty, strength, and individuality of Black women, creating a space where they are seen, heard, and understood on their own terms.
About Christelle
Christelle Da Gama is a final-year Creative Digital Media student at TU Dublin. She chose this course because of her love for creative storytelling and desire to grow and express that in different ways. Over the past four years, she has had the opportunity to explore graphic design, filmmaking/production, and audio editing, and has developed a passion for creating meaningful, visual stories. During her internship with Self Help Africa, she worked on design, video, and content creation, which helped her build confidence and develop her skills in a real-world setting. She truly values everything she has learned throughout this journey, and is excited to keep growing, creating, and telling stories that connect with people.
