Ciara Fox - The Home Place
An Immersive Portrait of Rural Irish Farm Life, 1920s–1960s

The Home Place is an immersive installation exploring rural Irish farm life from the 1920s to the 1960s. Inspired by the early experiences of my maternal and paternal grandparents, all four of whom grew up on farms, I created a project comprised of visuals and audio.
The digital designs are printed on woven canvas and stretched around wooden frames, blending archival family photographs with recent images of my grandmother’s derelict farmhouse and land. The ambient soundscape includes atmospheric sounds and a conversation between my grandmother Rose, and her sister Bridie, adding character and context to the visuals. Together, they tell a story of resilience, simplicity, and enduring bonds that defined the era.
The project serves as both a social history documentary and a personal tribute to a way of life built on hard work, community, deep connection and care for the land.
