Andreea Cerna - The Book Memo
A memo is a message. A direct, deliberate message meant for a specific person.
The Book Memo takes that idea and applies it to book cover design, asking, "What is a cover really saying, to whom, and why should it matter?" This project explores how visual elements communicate with readers across the age demographics of children, teens, young adults and adults, shaping emotional and psychological responses to a story before it is opened. The Book Memo charts the process of cover design through insights gathered from interviews with publishing companies and established book cover designers, allowing industry perspectives to inform creative decisions. The project encompasses the redesign of four classical book covers, each tailored to a distinct age group, examining how typography, colour, imagery and layout shift to meet audience expectations. Outputs include printed book jackets, promotional materials, a printed magazine documenting the research journey, and social media content featuring industry interviews.
