Typographic Portraits
2nd year students were asked to carefully study the features of their face, while composing a sketch. Using only typographic elements they communicated their features using typographic characters and glyphs alone, firstly in a collage on paper, and secondly in digital format.
Sketches
The sketches demonstrated that innate drawing skills were not the most important factor in communicating character – carful concentration while paying attention to the changing contours yielded some great results… Hover over the pictures if you need some help recognising your class-mates!

Successful collages combined experimentation with colour, scale, cropping, orientation and space…

Simple software techniques like font-family experimentation, transforming, scaling and colour consideration combined with concentration and patience produced some impressive digital portraits…
