For long time now I have wanted to try my hand at a 365 photography project. For some reason or another I always missed the start of the project (1st Jan) and then just said myself, “Ah! sure I’ll do it next year”. Well next year rolled around a little quicker then I thought and I found myself on the verge of actually starting the project for 2011. The first thing I did was create a new WordPress blog on my portfolio site. This would enable me to post my images and write a small back story for each image.
The next thing I did was look around the web to see what other people were doing for their 365 projects. Some people have very focused projects. For example, some 365 projects consist solely of self portraits and some projects have quite specific themes such as still life, landscape etc. The focus of a 365 project is quite personal. For me it was an excuse to take all the photos I have been meaning to take over the years but never got around to it and of course whatever else I see along the way that catches my eye. For me there were 4 strong reason to start this project:
1. Having to take a photo a day forces you to constantly look for a photographic opportunities and helps develop your eye.
2. As stated above, there’s lots of photos I have always wanted to try and this project gives me the excuse to take them.
3. The project will stand as a body of work and knowledge at the end of the year that I can leverage for future photographs.
4. Its not just about the photograph taking. Writing about my work in terms of the artistic/creative decisions and the technological decisions will help me grow as a photographer and will help me develop my own style.
For me, this project is just as much about the reflective process as it is about taking photos. So even though its the 5th of January why don’t you consider starting a similar project. You could take a photo a week or maybe even just a photo a month and write about your photographic experiences. I can guarantee that by the end of the process you will have improved as a photographer.
